I am impressed by his attention to detail. He wicketed an over-sized Miniature American Shepherd on the final day of a 4 day cluster and dq’d him in the class before. He watched all of the dogs all the way around. He has soft, gentle hands (though really didn’t do a full ‘Corgi’ exam). He speaks softly so watch and listen up. He likes a movement and ran us around more than superficial judges which I like. He absolutely does not look up the lead. The best dog wins. He BOB to a handler w the best dog and BOS to an amateur w the best bitch. I did not win under him though he gave my bitch close scrutiny. I watched him in several breeds and agreed with his choices. We were the last class in a long 4 day cluster and he did not scrimp on time but gave each dog its due.

This is the 2nd time I have observed what this judge picks. He will choose the best dogs in the regular classes, but, for Winners, BOW, BOB, etc., will put up known faces, and not the deserving dogs based on their color.

Very consistent. All handlers without regard for style or type. Too bad, as he definitely missed some nice animals.
Jan 17, 2017AnonHounds
Thoughtful, consistent and absolutely not influenced by handler. Good movement a must

I think he is very fair. Has never seemed political to me. Has been very consistent in picking the same type. Very pleasant to show to. I like seeming both him and his wife at the shows. They are both excellent with puppies, though his wife's tick tacks might scare a few

Very fair judge, not political at all. As an OH won under him with top handlers in the ring. Likes movement, and confident dog in the ring.

This judge was easy to show to in several breeds. He was specific on what he wanted you to do and he seemed to have a plan in mind when making his choices. I did not always agree but I could see why he went where he did. I would bring dogs to this judge again.

Really nice man what is enjoying his job... Appreciated good movement and nice coat work on wire-haired breeds.

Fair, not political. He want a confident dog that baits.

I really like this judge. Someone I really respect. In toys he has taken my dog in high placements and other times not. Some would say not consistent, I disagree. He really is into movement and if something outmoved me, or my dog was having an off time and being grumpy and not moving as he/she should. I feel like not political at all. Judges what is best in front of him that day. His biggest fan!

I am very impressed with this judge. Watched him judge several breeds; most of the time I agreed with him. When I didn't, it was usually b/c he saw something off in the movement (or on) that I missed. Will put up deserving puppies, if they show well, even for breed. I did not win anything, but he was nice enough to tell me what I needed to do to get my puppy winning (her traits are good; just work on her showing). This is a very professional judge who is a class act. update 3 years later: showed to him in group--he seemed curt and political. Still leaving him as a 5--groups aren't the whole story.

Knows breed standard and judges to it. Will use an O/H in group with a good dog. Be sure your dog is presented properly and is groomed to perfection. Likes good movement and typey. If you have it, you will win, handler or not.

This guy seems to like his job. Uses the BBE class..and likes type. Knows a good one when he sees one.

Nice, nice man. He actually had a few different placements this his wife the day prior which I think showed his integrity with his own opinion. He does move the rings around pretty fast. I won breed and he gave us a group placement. Owner handled, did not see any politics just the best dogs. Will show under him again. His wife gave me select that day prior but complimented me on my bitch, so I know they were both good eyes, just will do as they feel best.

All about the north end of the lead.

He did not judge greyhounds but I watched him in group. My dog was jittery as I had asked a friend to show him (injured knee at show) and he'd never had anyone other but me on the lead. Mr. Hartinger gave her plenty of time to calm the dog down and he was gentle with the dog and gave him a good, hard look. He complimented her on the dogs good, clean movement. His G1 winner was a well presented, owner-handled, moderate Rhodesian Ridgeback. A choice I couldn't argue with. Placed a pro-handled whippet, G3. Don't remember the other placements. Did a good job and I'll show to him in the future.

Not the worst I have shown to, but would hesitate to show to him again because I really did not get his placings.

Nice & pleasant to show to. Very good with puppies. Not so sure about his value of movement. Thought he rewarded some mediocre movement in Sibe ring, lots of rolling toplines. Seemed to go with the "safe" handlers dogs.

As in Cresteds (below) he seems to want to rewrite the standards, he missed this in our breed "chest narrow", and "elbows close to brisket".
Sep 30, 20121anonsheltie
Picked a badly groomed bitch with no hair over a nicely groomed one with beautiful coat and moved wonderful and had a handler showing her. Obviously likes the worst he can find.
Jun 4, 20121cmshetland sheepdog
Was very rough going over my bitch in the bred by class. He grabbed her mouth and startled her then barely looked at her again. Handler judge.

This judge likes movement a lots of body. Will show to him again. Very pleasant to show to, Likes fronts on a spaniel.

Over the years I have found him to do a good job of judging but he does have a tendancy to look at the people-end of the lead. The most disturbing thing that Mr Hartinger did WHILE IN THE RING was to tell exhibitors in the Open Hairless Bitch class "I guess no one bothered to tell the others [people with powderpuffs who entered] that I can't stand puffs! They don't deserve to be in the ring!" Then he laughed! The exhibitors that he spoke to told the other exhibitors when they came out of the class. Of course no puff won any classes except in the Open Puff class...he couldn't get out of judging them in that class. The next 2 days a puff female won WB/BOW/BOS & WB/BOW/BOB over 6 specials!!! Very well deserved wins on the bitch's part. Wife is a better judge and not so close minded or political.

Looks for strong movement, sound type and showy. He knows a good dog and will put them up handlers or no handlers!!
May 14, 2010KanapahaRough Collie
Very pleasant judge and knows the standard. Awarded WD to my 6-9mo boy, in spite of my handling mistakes. Will definitely show to him again.

Mr Hartinger seems to know exactly what it is that he wants in our breed, He wants a middle of the road dog in size, and a very typey old style minpin. Movement really doesnt matter.
Jul 15, 20094Carri J Lindblom BorischBernese Mountain DogsExpert!
Likes a moderate dog with good movement. Was very patient with a new exhibitor and some spooky dogs. Did not put up the spooky dogs--good thing.
Jul 13, 20095anoncollie
movement expecially side gait.

Very pleasant, knowledgeable, excellent ring procedure. Consistent in choosing type and correct movement.
Jul 13, 2008anonTerriers
He puts up ordinary dogs rather than typy ones. Also will put up a handler with an inferior dog over an owner.
Jun 23, 20082Shar peiExpert!
Looked and looked at my puppy bitch but gave her nothing. Afraid to put up a puppy for a major?
May 7, 20085monestaMaltese
Pleasant to show to, likes good movement. Would show to again.
May 6, 20085PatHavanese
Mr. Hartinger was very nice to show under and knowlegeable about the breed. He appeared to like a sound mover and a dog to look like a dog and a bitch to look the feminine counterpart.
Mar 24, 20085Stephanie SchultesChihuahua
Likes to put up a dog with a pretty face and good mover.I love to show to him he is always a pleasure

Has come a long way since he started judging. Is learning but it is a slow process. Thinks he knows more than he does.
Jan 17, 20084AnonNon SportingExpert!
Too bad he can't see past who is on the other end of the lead. Rude to show to in the ring!

One of the best. Just knows a good dog and has studied breed type. Nothing negative about him
Oct 31, 20073AnonHerding
Pleasant, seems to recognize movement, however rarely puts it up. Lack of breed type and serious faults of gait seem to be acceptable to this gentleman. Confounding , at best.
Aug 26, 20072SunclipseTibetan Terriers
Political @ group level, reads a lot, nice & pleasant, good with pups, type, movement, & side gait play important role. Wife is a better judge.
Aug 23, 20073WOW Pomz & Pinzvarious Toy BreedsExpert!
He is very into the dog showing to him and giving lots of expression. He wants typey and a clean mover...he moves the dogs a lot. He seems to enjoy color and had no problem putting up a nice dog/bitch of color. He'll use a bit bigger dog (still within std). He is very polite and pleasant and good with the dogs.
