Clearly, someone has said something to this judge, or he's somehow become aware of his reputation for NOT watching gaiting, because at the last few shows (several clusters) that I've seen him judge, he has COMPLETELY changed that aspect of his judging. When previously he was widely known for never watching a dog gait and looking outside the ring or elsewhere during individual gaiting and simply ignoring the go-round, he now will actually look at the dogs as they gait the down and back!!! SUCH a HUGE change for this judge!!! He was always consistent in not watching the gaiting, AND for placing dogs accordingly, with no regard for good movement. While his placements have not really changed (still erratic and no value placed on moving well), AT LEAST he now goes through the motions of Looking at the dogs as they gait. So perhaps a small improvement!

The entire Pekingese community should honestly be ashamed of him. He put up a very average Samoyed with misshapen eyes, excessive kick-up of the hind legs, close-moving front and rear, for BIS over an extremely high-quality, well-bred Pekingese with very few flaws, all insignificant, as well as a Montgomery County terrier show BIS-winning Sealyham Terrier (To be fair, the working group judge is also at fault for putting up such a mediocre specimen for Group 1st). Why would he and the working group judge do this, you ask? Because this Samoyed happened to be handled by a very well-known pro handler NOTORIOUS for terrible sportsmanship, acting like a bratty entitled insufferable child on the rare occasions he loses, and actively manipulating and taking advantage of politics to score undeserved wins with mediocre dogs. I don’t know what went through this judge’s mind when making this godawful political decision but the fact that he snubbed a clearly superior example of HIS OWN BREED leaves a terrible taste in my mouth and puts him on my DNS list. Also, guess which Samoyed he put up for BOB at the AKC National Championship over several very superior, far more deserving dogs and bitches? Yep, you know who…the very same aforementioned Samoyed. I've watched this judge at many shows, judging lots of breeds and several groups. I've shown for several decades, handled a number of breeds, and judged my own breed.' I've gotten wins under this judge, but have no respect for his ability to judge. Why does this judge get assignments?! Don't bother to show to him. Save your entry fees and stay home. This is the type of judge ruining dog shows. Keating has a thing about NOT looking at a dog while the dog is gaiting. He pretty much refuses to look at side-gait at all -- very literally. He will look outside of the ring, at other dogs, and even at the ceiling. Turns his back as soon as the dog has done the down and back. He barely watches a few steps of the down and back. It was truly ridiculous! Watch him next time while he's judging, he's consistent about not looking at side gait. While I personally can evaluate gaiting in a few steps, I would Not base a judging decision on it AND I feel it's not fair to exhibitors to waste the time their dog is gaiting by looking outside the ring instead of closely watching the dog I'm evaluating. He also places dogs at random, for inexplicable reasons, other than he likes to put up pros, kids, and people he knows. He obviously does not understand canine movement or structure. Does not like bait at all. As soon as he turns from the judging table as dogs walk into the ring, he'll say No bait (so it's not for poor baiting skills or untrained dogs). Keating likes to measure and weigh in breeds that have disqualifications, maybe because that way he can rule out a portion of the entry and some people love a judge who enforces weight/size DQs. Valid point, but does he really need to weigh/measure every entry in every breed with a DQ? Show chairs, quit hiring this guy.

Had the unfortunate experience to show my GCH male to this man. The competition, a 9 month puppy bitch, clearly immature, undeveloped and not even finished groomed by the pro this day for the ring. The puppy had to be taken twice on the diagonal and paced, skipped and jumped on the go around. Judging is subjective and all dogs have faults but a judge should follow the standard and be fair and unbiased in their selection. When a judge greets the handler like a long lost bother it’s clear how the judging is going to result. A total embarrassment and will never show to this man again.

Very strict and regimented with ring procedures. Felt like it was part of a game with the 8ft apart, constantly reminding everyone to stay 8ft apart and to stand against the fence or wall off the matt, so he could run each dog around matts individually. Was gentle with exam. Wants you to stand, not on floor setting up dog. I feel he was fair with placement for most of his choices (WILL put up color), although questionable on his RWD choice. This dog army craweled around the ring and should not of been awarded RWD when there were others that performed way better. It left you to only assume it was who was at the end of the lead because it didnt make sense otherwise!

If only his ability to pick a good dog matched his ego. His instructions are clear but confusing and pointless. 8 feet apart, 5 to a side in a ring no more than 20 feet? One dog at a time in the ring due to COVID when the breed before us was all in at the same time. I guess only some breeds can have owners at risk for COVID? The ring is like a game to him. Only thing consistent is his bad choices. He needs to be reeled in. Horrible judge and the comments on this page seem to consistently support this. They need to quit hiring this guy.

As comments say below. Constantly picking poor examples in breeders. Being universally discussed is judging very poorly on various toy judges. Not sour grapes as picked me. My puppy was not near quality of specials put up over. Embarrassed hollow win.

Was extremely rude to OH exhibitor who was showing for the very first time and after this experience, possibly the last. They did not know about his NEW NO BAIT rule. That’s not a great way to grow this dying sport. It is expensive to show and now more than ever, we need to try to bring people into this sport we love. It takes so little to be kind and explain or at least post “NO BAIT” allowed.

Dr. Keating has his own ring procedure...listen to his instructions, and follow them, and you will be fine! (minimal bait, free stacking if possible) I feel he honestly evaluates the dogs, and not the handlers.

Oddish ring procedure. Quality of the dogs does’t always matter, the face attached to the dog does. Will not travel to show to him and may even skip the show he judges in my backyard.

He prefers a handler or special and has his mind made up before watching or examining other dogs. He will also have "conversations" with the handlers while in the ring while others are waiting.

2021 update: Dr Keating lets everyone know his expectations in the ring - minimal bait, keep 8' apart, no congregating, and bring the dog straight into him for the down and back. Will wicket or weigh breeds with height/weight DQs. That being said, I thought he was a fantastic judge, fair, competent, and considerate. I'd travel to show to him anytime. Truly a keeper of the standards for those breeds he is tasked with evaluating. I had the opportunity to observe his breed judging in several high entry breeds that were deep in quality over the weekend. I could easily follow his preferences and picks based on those preferences. Despite less than stellar reviews, I was excited to show off my special in groups due to his fine judging at the breed level. It was a totally different experience at the group level. In a very large working group, he had the fastest judging time of the 4 day cluster. Had made up his mind early and only really "examined" or considered 6 of the dogs, the rest of us were rushed and rejected. So my summary would be great at the class and breed level, political and predictable at the group. 2021 update - for owner handlers he has very very specific ways he wants to run his ring. ABSOLUTELY NO BAIT and particular about order and postions, likes to line you up and review fronts at the end. Good picks, just picky. Interestingly, that didnt carry over to the pros, just OH.

Bring your "A" game to your handling skills or expect you will be called on it. He has a specific process you must pay attention to if you expect to do anything. Handling errors will cost you regardless of the quality of your dog. Has high standards and rewards those that pay attention and have good dogs on the lead. Dry sense of humor that could be misinterpreted...and he does like to 'buck the system'. Does his own thing which can be very refreshing!

Careful to watch every dog all the way through. Relaxed with the dogs.An odd enphasis on the chest, and had us stand straight on so that he could see chest width. Somewhat inconsistent choices off breed standard, but clearly watched the dogs, not the handlers.

In a small entry, I think that his choices were fair. He did not look up the lead as I am a new exhibitor and he had friends/a bigger name in the ring. Free stacking is important, be confident in the ring. He awarded my class dog BOB over a special.

Power tripper. Gave me a lecture about showing the bite, in a breed where I obviously know way more than he does. (In our breed, it's pretty much "Teeth? OK, good!") Could not find my multiple group-winning, BISS bitch in a small NOHS group.

I agree with Triple Play. blatently plays power games, loves to anger handlers by putting up puppies for breed, I watched it several times over a long period of time. He is rude, arrogant and wouldn't know a good dog if it bit him. DNS

Dr Keating has moved from being one of my favorite judges to my DNS list. He usually selects my dogs so it is not because of his choices, it is how he treats some of the exhibitors. I watched him verbally reprimand an Owner Handler for giving their dog bait on the table. I then watched 3 different professional handlers carry in fistfuls of bait and feed it to their dogs on the table. They also threw bait in the ring and nothing was said. He has his own agenda and only a select few on his entitled list.

Unlike some of the posters, I found Dr. Keating to be kind to both exhibitors and dogs. He has gentle hands, and for my puppies' first show, it was a very good experience. His directions are clear and he ran his ring with efficiency and expertise. I did not win under him, but I respect his choices. He did put up class dogs & OH dogs w familiar faces. The show was the first ever double show run concurrently for AKC and if he was going to be snarky, he could have as it was new territory for all concerned. It was a pretty long day (8:00-6:30) and he judged Show 2 BIS. He was still kind and complimentary of the new format, the club, show committee, and exhibitors. UPDATE: 3/8/20 I am sorry to say Dr. Keating is just going thru the motions now. He does not even bother to watch on the go around. His exam is cursory and superficial. He looks at the bite instead of my showing it. I would prefer to show it myself without his having had his hands in dozens of other mouths before mine. I used to like him as a judge but now he acts bored and like he’d much rather be elsewhere and his placements show it. Sad. I used to admire him. So I’m dropping him a couple points.

I will never show to this man! Don’t know why any club would hire him. He is impossible to work with, demanding, extremely condescending and just plain unpleasant and rude! Only looks at one end of the lead. Told exhibitors this past show not to play with their dogs in the ring. It was his job to judge the dogs. Very entitled and pompous.

Pleasant but condescending, and really appeared to be looking up the lead. Manipulated the results in another breed so that the class dogs would get a point, and told the owner of the special he was doing it!

Observed his judging several terrier breeds today and can tell he did pretty good job. Was pleasant to show to in our breed. Treated exhibitors nicely. One of exhibitors was in scooter and hot stuck in a grass... Ran to her, helped to get scooter moving . Can not tell that he is extremely handler oriented. Choices were about even pro or not. Would show again. Update: another show, November 2018. We had nice entry half owner - handled and half - pro. I'm agree on most of his choices. In our breed he put two puppies dog and bitch) for bob and BOS over 3 nice specials. One of puppies was handled by me and my kennel partner. We both are OHs. Yes, he mentioned about he doesn't like using of bait in the ring and likes to see dogs free stacked. Not a big deal to me. Will show to him again, do not see any issues.

apparently not the kind of judge who will try and make a puppy's experience in the ring a good one. Singleton puppy got spooked by something outside the ring, dropped its tail; was obviously worried, but stood for exam no problem, just didn't have tail up during the go-round and wouldn't bait. Judge gave the puppy 1st place ribbon. Only one other class entry who also got a 1st place ribbon. When both entries back in for winners, he withheld reserve winners, saying that the puppy did not have the proper temperament for the breed and wanted to make sure if winners was somehow disqualified the puppy wouldn't get a point. Sad this judge couldn't make more of an effort with a puppy.

The only end of the lead the judge could find was the handler end. He put up handlers for WD, WB, BOB,BOS,and Select choices. There was a nice entry with several choices but he never looked. Your entry is wasted money with this judge.

Came away from his judging totally confused. I watched him judge several breeds and found no consistency. He had some really nice Specials in my breed (miniature american shepherds) to choose from but he put up a puppy for the Breed so previous posts about him being a giant killer are correct. Usually a judge will lean toward type or movement. He missed key components of type in several breeds and totally missed the good herding dog movement in the mini american specials. He put up a cute puppy but its movement was incorrect. My first and last time showing to him.

Have only shown to this judge a couple of times. Have won, and have lost. He is always pleasant to show to, always easy to understand (and this can be a problem with some soft spoken judges), All his placements were spot on except for one, which told me he definitely is NOT about topline in my breed. Fair, gentle hands. Altho I placed well, other than the afore mentioned item, I am not sure what he looks for. I would show to him again.

VHUGE UPDATE! I am disgusted with this man today! Its completely obvious to ALL in our breed how games are played and how he goes right along with them. How on earth he thinks what he did today is not recognized for exactly what it was is beyond me (and the rest of the Staffy world). Steve you should be ashamed! I wont type what was done but just so you know - it was not judging - it was a behind the scenes agreement. Then the winning bitch was posted PHOTOSHOPPED with an obvious mistake made to cover up how awful she is. EWe have all seen her. She is an American Bully not a staffy. This is completely a joke. Very small entry so cannot speculate how well he knows the breed or how he judges accordingly however my comment is - he was super fast, not detail oriented, perhaps because of the small entry he didnt feel the importance of actual judging and thorough examining the dogs in his ring whereas he could have taken this opportunity to spend more than 30 seconds per dog to try. to be fair the weather was horrid - but - the handlers and dogs showed up and did their best so ......

After today's judging, this judge in on my DNS list. When the winners of each class come back into the ring, I expect a judge to at least have the dogs move around the ring together at least once as a class. This judge had the dogs come back into the ring and immediately pointed to his winner, never bothering to move his winners class. This gives the impression of no consideration for the other winners and being in a hurry and a bit uncaring of all the other class winners

Dr. Keating had a small entry of flat-coated retrievers (1-1-12). He was easy on the dogs, gave clear ring instructions and appeared to have little grasp of our breed standard. Yes, the class dog was BOB, class bitch was BOS. They were certainly not the best examples in the ring. I would also not say that his winners were the best movers in the ring either, so i am puzzled about what he was looking for.

Very nice man with soft and gentle hands. Soft-spoken, but gives clear and easy-to-understand ring instructions. Unfortunatrly, his awards were very inconsistent and all over the place, so I have no idea whatsoever he was looking for. Some awards had correct toplines; others had bad ones. Some awards had correct movement; others had very incorrect movement or movement that could not be determined. Some awards had correct heads; others did not. Some winners were small; others were large. Awards were given to pro handlers (BOB & BOS) and OHs (WD & WB/BOW).

watched Dr Keating judge several breeds prior to mine & he did find good moving, typey dogs. Put up O/H & class dogs for breed. Feeling pretty good as I have an great moving girl........I have no idea how he managed to find the two worst dogs in a pretty nice line up. Not saying my dog should have won, there were other quality animals exhibited to him that would have been consistent with what he liked in other breeds. Nice guy, good ring procedure, soft hands..... I'd take a pup to him for ring experience, but that's about it.

I have never gotten points from this judge but he is still on my show list. He seems to have consistant picks. Always pleasant, pays attention in the ring. Very patient. Although reading the Tibetan spaniel remark would cause some concern if a judge gave blue ribbons but refused winners. He has been on my sporting DNS list for awhile, totally inconsistent, fancies himself quite the giant killer it seems. But I decided to try my smaller dogs. Despite winning under breed specialists the days previous, he couldn't see any dog that wasn't at the upper end of the height standard. Missed a lot of quality by doing that. I won't bother again. One of the few judges I can say I have no respect. Sad.

Did a quick but thorough job. Wasted no time sorting through what was in the ring to find what he wanted. At recent big shows he picked handler friends and got away from good type. Not sure if he is overstretching himself.

Not a clue! He is both sickeningly sweet, and doesn't care about anything but HANDLERS! He was more interested in talking on his cel phone than judging dogs! Trades Assignments

Found him to be very political.

Fun judge tells like it is don't ask him about your dog if you don't want the truth and judges the same way I do agree about finding ALL the handlers in the group though

He can find a good dog at the breed level and can certainly find EVERY top handler in the group

Fair judge that looks at the dog and not the handler in the breed ring. Would show to again.

I watched him judge group and he looked at each exhibitor for face recognition-put up all handers- on my DNS list

Didn't win under this judge; but observed that he likes a more compact dog with clean movement. Will put up a puppy.

Very consistant judge. Likes movement. Looks at the correct end of the lead. |
