About being political: I have no clout. I have been showing for one year. He awards my puppy because he likes her. He had his choice of handlers, so that couldn't have been it. I think he's fun and seems to be having a nice time, which I value very much.
Jul 9, 20241RocklandChows
Had him as a judge change, and received what I expected. He made his decision before examining the 1st dog. Put up the faces he knew after a cursory exam.

Pleasant, very quick with the exam. Appreciates proper movement. Pay close attention.

Seems to like Belgian Sheepdogs. Very fast ring procedure. So pay attention to what he says. Likes good temperament. Doesn't seem to be a perfectionist when it comes to handling. Would show again.

Very political, all over the place on selections, no clue on basics, should not be a judge
Mar 19, 2023AnonymousChinese Crested
Have shown to him multiple times over the years and I always find him to be fair. Doesn't appear to favor handlers at all and puts up what he likes. Definitely spends almost no time on the table exam. Appreciates nice movement.

If there are no handlers in the ring, he can find a good dog.
Jun 29, 20224smilyjoetoys
difficult to evaluate- was very quick appeared to not even look at my dog-turned his back on us several times and then awarded us a group2

Bored, did not look at dogs. Picked dogs no one else did nd got dumped day prior. DNS.

Definitely went with the big-name pros today.

Excited to show to this judge. Reading he appreciates movement. Hope he find an excellent shoulders over the straight ones. I was so impressed he puts up the best moving dog even from the classes

Pleasant judge. Very very very little exam. Literally looks at head, bite, runs hand down back and that is it. Movement judge all the way.
Mar 21, 20182DsbgirlSporting, non-sporting
He is good with puppies which is nice. Can’t say I could really give you a consistent type he was looking for. Movement was not in play. Did watch him all weekend joke & chat with all the handlers. Even ringside while the handlers were in the ring. Makes you go hmmmm
Jan 8, 20181SapphiresBernese Mt DogsExpert!
Watched him judge a large supported entry. He did not put his hands on the dogs hardly at all. Was not able to tell what he was looking for. Was comical when it came to the BOB! He literally pulled dogs out and made two lines. After the 3rd one we figured out one was his dismissal line and one was his keep line. Then he had two long lines and one was literally a long line of all owner handlers and the other all professional handlers with the exception of the owner handler that hired him! It really was hilarious! BTW,a dog I bred won the breed so this is not sour grapes. I am just glad that there was a handler on him otherwise I don't think he would have found him.
Oct 15, 20171Anonymous Non sporting
have show to him several times, he does a good job judging UNLESS handlers show up, and the his knowledge of the standards goes right out the window. He puts up all handlers no matter what they're showing. Save your money if your an owner handler, you won't even get a look
May 27, 20171Kathy LorentzenEnglish Springer Spaniels
This man continues to get so many assignments because he draws the professional handlers to the shows. He has no breed knowledge in Sporting breeds in my opinion and barely touches the dogs or watches them. Very rude, he is on our NO SHOW list forever.
Nov 16, 20161jrliddSamoyeds
Showed to him several times, never again. He was all about the handlers. Incorrectly marked a placement for one of our girls in his book. Speaks very softly and is hard to hear yet expects everyone to hear and understand him. Only watched a few dogs all the way around the ring.
Nov 3, 20165Mary Ann ByrnsDobermans
He judges the dog and willing to put up nice puppies. Very much a movement judge but does pay attention to structure in final pick line up. He went over the dogs more than once and this showed to me he was picking dogs and not faces. Very pleasant demeanor.
Oct 18, 20162VONWOLFF08Dachshunds
No problem for Judge Olvis to find the best dogs in LH or SM dachshunds. He has a good eye for structure and movement. Was fast and efficient in judging, easy to understand and good with the young dogs and newby handlers. Will look for him to enter under again. 7/2018. With PH's in the ring, no chance for OH's to get points. Maybe he's fair when no pros are entered, but if there are, it's almost decided before the first go around. Lost some respect for this judge.

Had a very pleasant experience showing my BBE bitch and my specialty bitch to him this past weekend. We had a small entry but he was nice to all in the ring. Saw him again for groups ... Was in a very competitive group but had fun even if we didn't get a placement
May 24, 20165AnonChinese Cresteds
I thought he was very pleasant and he looked like he enjoyed judging. I thought his judging was very fair. I would take a puppy to him any day as he doesn't force them and touches them lightly. He seems like he is very confident in his picks. Which I like. You may not like my dog but give my dog the time and consideration that I pay for, which he did and if a judge is confident in what they picked they must like that dog for a reason. Very fair will show to him again!
May 23, 20162A Smart Owner HandlerGD
I find this man to be extremely rude. He has no interaction and is very unpleasant. I don't even like his picks in my own breed nor in others I've watched. If a new person was starting out, I feel sorry for them. He could drive away a new comer. Yelled at me with his cupped hands around his mouth in a very very noisy, poor acoustics building and told me what to do from the back of the line with a very sarcastic tone what to do, just because I could not hear him. I would never ever give him another entry. I sat and watched him do working and disagreed with many of his classes, but that's ok... I will not give my money as an owner/breeder handler to such a rude judge. He needs some lessons in personal treatment of the people paying his way there and home. I'm able to handle rude, sarcastic and nasty, but I feel sorry for the new comers... that kind of treatment is inexcusable.
May 1, 20164Tatianaterrires
Do not know how about handlers... but I watched him judging few different breeds what I'm familiar with this weekend in WV and totally agreed with practically all his placements. When it came to our turn in the ring, he put my owner-handled Special for OS and was very nice with our green class dogs too. I really liked him.

I like this judge, was good with the puppy's he loves correct movement . Yes he gave it to my 7 month old bitch she can move she went WB.BV
Apr 17, 20161AnonymousHoundsExpert!
Totally agree this is a "handler" judge. He also puts up people that he knows. Barely touched my dog on the table as he already knew who he was giving the win to, and also preferred one color in the breed over the others.
Jan 31, 20161M. BurkESS
Face, Face, Face. If you aren't one, don't bother. Even the one who won over me said it never should have happened as my dog out showed and was more deserving of the win. Was warned not to show to him, should have listened. DNS list for life.
Jul 21, 20155QRHerding
One of my favorite judges. It's true, he has no patience or appreciation for a spook or a nasty temperament and will excuse incorrect temperament and I've seen him do it multiple times. Very kind with puppies but appreciates well-trained. Wants an excellent mover who will bait to him and show some expression. Deadheads and dragging along are a no-go. He moves quickly so pay attention.

I have shown to Mr. Olvis now three times. Results varied. He is new to terriers and in the three times, each time the choices were more correct according to the standard.

The show: Donner Trail KC, Roseville, CA, Saturday 10/4/2014 AKC National Owner-Handler Series, Non-Sporting Group Disclaimer: We were awarded 2nd in the group It was the hottest part of a very warm (90+F) day when we showed to Mr. Olvis. He judged every OH group and OH best in show that day, so he was out in the heat for quite a while. From beginning to end, though, he was pleasant and joking with the exhibitors. His examination was thorough but gentle, but he moved quickly through the process so that we weren’t in the heat any longer than absolutely necessary. I think it is important to point out that, contrary to the way I’ve seen it handled at other shows – and, from what I heard, contrary to the preferences of the club – Mr. Olvis held up a few of the OH groups to wait for dogs that were being judged in the regular group. He was very clear that he didn’t want owner-handlers to have to sacrifice one competition for the sake of the other. As a proud owner-handler, that level of respect will guarantee that Mr. Olvis will get entries from us in the future. An important note to my fellow lovers of the “smooshy faced” breeds: Mr. Olvis awarded brachiocephalic dogs in both the regular and OH groups. The Boston took 2nd and the French Bulldog took 4th in the regular group; the French Bulldog, the Boston and the Bulldog placed in the OH group; and the French Bulldog went on to win OH Best in Show.

Showed to Mr. Olvis today. He was attentive, watched dogs closely, followed their movement all the way around the ring. I will show to him again. Was good with my baby puppy and forgave some of her puppy antics.
Aug 14, 20142anomousgroup judging
Mr Olvis tends to gravitate towards choosing dog shown by professional handlers. Our experience was in the group rings in which Mr Olvis barely touched my dog during the examination. Mr Olvis did not judge my dog in the breed. There for the group was the first time he examined the dog which gave the appearance that his mind was already made up. Everyone deserves equal consideration. We did not feel we received that from him. As a owner handler he is in my top 10 DNS List
Jan 28, 20143AnonymousWorking Dogs
Very confusing judge... He put up a beautiful moving bitch for WB/BOW but then put up top handlers with type dogs without proper movement for breed and select. I'm not really sure what he is looking for.
Jul 14, 20132Kaije KennelsPharaoh Hounds
This Judge first and foremost appeared very rush for our Pharaoh Hound Specialty. He did not give enough time for an exhibitor to set up a sighthound and was on the dog very quickly. A typical sighthound personality would've become skittish. His ring procedure was a bit confusing and he didn't talk very loud until he chastized you in the ring. As a handler, I would show to him again, but I will never take a puppy to him.
Nov 26, 20125anonymousGreat Dane
A very pleasant judge. He will take his time to find the right dog, seemed to like soundness and expression. It didn't seem to matter the color or the person handling, just the overall dog. Would definitely show to again.
Oct 19, 20122Kass Gouldingflat-coated retriever
Mr Olvis had a relatively small entry (single point in each sex only). He was pleasant and easy on the dogs - very cursory exam, but did spend a lot of time apparently looking at outlines (however, he only found *2* correct outlines out of all of his winners, and neither of them won the breed) . His breed dog was predictable, and he missed the typiest exhibits for winners in both sexes.

Good overall judge. Seems to have the ability to find the balance and harmony of a good dog.
Dec 21, 20114anonymousPomeranians
Has done a good job judging my breed even the times I didn't win. Might look at handlers a "little bit" but not overly. Likes a pretty face, overall nice outline, and has awarded some relatives big majors so probably likes a consistent "type". Updated: OK 5th time I've seen him judge and suddenly I am totally baffled. Dumped dogs of the type he previously liked. Put up the dogs/bitches with the least coat. Moved and moved the dogs but then put up the worst movers. Confused.. will try again... had a bad day maybe.
Jul 24, 20111Owner HandlerGreat Dane
All Handlers put up today. Don't wast your $$ if you don't have a face on the end of the lead!! In one class he put up a bitch with a well known handler on it that ran away from him and out of the ring over the other one that was owner handled!!
Jul 14, 20114Robin GatesBoston Terriers
Mr Olvis did an amazing job. He looked at expression, topelines and movement. He was very consistent in his picks and chose the best dogs on that day. I will seek him out as he does a great job in looking for the best dog according to the standard and no he did not pick my dog.
Mar 23, 20114Dixie DeverDachshund
Not afraid to put up a colored or patterned dog.
Jan 31, 20111AnonymousBoxer
Blatantly looked up the lead after glancing at the dog, never looked back at a dog with a face at the top of the lead he didn't recognize. He spent quite a bit of time before judging began yucking it up with a handler who proceeded to take RWD, WB & SD. My short DNS list has grown by 1, with an * to say only put a dog in his ring if it's with a handler! No sour grapes, several others expressed same feelings after judging. I was told going in he was a handler judge, but I will give them a chance, usually 2, anyway. Mr Olvis will not get a 2nd chance from me!

Has been influenced by signals from outside of his ring on his placements. Nice ring procedures, likes head, coat, movement.
Jun 11, 20104Blair BarrettBoston Terrier
I felt he gave each dog a good look although it wasn't easy figuring out what he was looking for. He seemed to spend a lot of time on expression though. He was nice after judging and thanked me for showing him my bitch even though he didn't award us any points.

I was the breeder of the 2 Kom pups he excused. He truly seemed intent on pushing the puppies. He never gave us the chance to set up the puppies prior to him "jumping" on them! I was one of his breed mentors & I could not be more disappointed in any judge than him!!! I truly respected this man, but on June 7th he showed me a side I never want any puppy to experience!!!!! Save your money!!!
Jun 8, 20091elsokuvaszkuvasz and komondor
I used to love Mr Olvis. In fact, until yesterday, he held one of very few "5" rankings on my list. I changed that to a "1" yesterday. Mr Olvis was awful to show too, rolled his eyes and made quiet huffing sounds as he excused Komondor pups (just barely 9 months) when he showed not one ounce of patience in examining them. He could not have been more awful with them if he had intended on excusing them. The pup I was handling for my friend had taken reserve to a 5 point major the day before with me handling her. When I showed young and unsure Kuv pups to him years ago he earned the "5" rank from me FOR his gentle approach and patience with the breed. He has clearly become jaded and though my Kuv boy earned a Group Two the day before, in group this day, Olvis seemed to almost exclusively cut the pro's. Very, VERY disappointing; another judge I raved about to others is now on my DNS list.

Will put up color, movement, owner-handler.
Jan 22, 20094anonymoussporting
He gave my boy (who finished pretty easily) reserve, which I thought was fair. I was handling (I'm an owner) and doing a terrible job. I was grateful he was able to judge the dog and not the handler.
Nov 28, 20082Sheri WrightSiberian HuskyExpert!
Doesn't seem to much care about putting up the best dog anymore. He's just putting up handlers.
Aug 17, 20083AnonPug
Put up blacks. Good for black pug owners, not good if you have a fawn since he put up less deserving blacks over fawns. Very pleasant and professional; definitely takes his time. Political and will put up a handler, even a bad one.
May 16, 2008DachshundExpert!
Thought he was doing a good job all day with other breeds. Very thorough and careful. I don't know what happened when it came to wirehaired dachshunds. He put up a dog that moved extremely bad in the rear for BOB over a beautiful dog that won an Award of Merit at the recent Nationals. Hmmm...could it be because the handler of the bad-moving dog was a well-known handler?

Have shown under him a few times. A pleasant, patient judge who likes well put together dogs.

Needs work. Not sure he knows the breed very well.
Nov 4, 20071Adrienne FreyerKomondor and VizslaExpert!
Being a herding judge, he likes good movement. Appreciates a rare breed. He found the right puppy in Vizslas, but was not "brave" enough to give this puppy WB, when the vast majority of Vizsla people really thought the puppy was deserving, at least on that day.
Oct 21, 20072Setter BreederSettersExpert!
Very good with juniors in the ring. Was especially kind to a frightened child with lab. Many judges dismiss junior handlers, often with good dogs, so this was good to see.
