Inconsistent with his selections seemed to favor handlers. Not pleasant to dogs or exhibitors. Would not give this judge another entry.
Jun 12, 20242RocklandChows
Prefers pretty sculpted puppy over square and movement puppies. Does not understand the chow structure and the relationship to proper movement. Not sue he knows or cares about the breed stilted gate. should review the breed standard. Not consistent between dog and bitch structures.

Does not give time to set up on the table. Nor does he do a through the exam. Barely looks at the dogs on the go round.

Judge puts up friends.. no matter what the dog looks like or how it acts.. DNS

Bolus made all his awards in breed, then he judged OH separately and put up another special bitch OVER his Select Bitch for OHBOB, reversing himself! AKC rep was called, OHBOB ribbon was taken away from one person and given to SB, and Bolus corrected his book. HOW is it that a judge can absolutely REVERSE their own placement within minutes? During best of breed judging, Champion Female A is better than Champion Female B and therefore wins Select over B, but moments later, Champion Female B is suddenly BETTER than Champion Female A and deserves to win OHBOB over A? How does that work? If it was lameness, the lame dog needs to be excused and the judge's book marked. OH rules have been in place since 2012. Bolus either didn’t know the rules (NO excuse, given how often he judges!), didn’t care enough to learn the rules (then WHY is he judging?!), couldn’t remember the rules (should NOT be judging in that case!), or could not remember what he had just done (again, should NOT be judging!). DNS, and definitely DO NOT HIRE!!!

Does not allow time for the first dog in line to set up for individual exam. While the dog is gaiting, he glances briefly at the dog on initial go-round but otherwise looked outside of ring, clearly bored. These were excellent quality dogs, multi-Group winners/placers, NOT pet quality dogs. Exam, down-and-back, NO go-round, just back to your place in line. Clearly NOT looking at movement! Maybe he doesn't like Sporting breeds??? He clearly had no interest in JUDGING them.

Truly unfortunate that this judge is unable to see past a dog having a tail. He Will put up a sub standard dog because it has no tail than put up the correct structurally correct dog with good structure type with excellent movement. Unlike the great sporting dog judges who always look for structure type and movement first and foremost have no problems putting up the better dog even though it has a tail. Will watch again at the future shows and see if he can put up the best moving and look past the tail.

I wish I had read this before I showed to him. On my DNS list forever and would recommend the same to anyone with a giant breed, unless you have a pro handling. Don't think he likes mastiffs and the dogs know it. As pointed out in this forum the young dogs backed up, - he was not patient or even courteous. Sad.

Shown to this guy before and stated he was a handler judge, he still is. He wants his exhibitors to pay attention to his directions and seems to get aggravated when one does not. One person did not use the ramp when instructed in the go around and his aggravation showed.

I showed to Mr Bolus this weekend in Bullmastiffs. He runs an extremely efficient ring. When a dog starts its down and back he wants the next dog set up. He finished breeds with times to spare which was huge as we had other breeds and Jr Showmanship that we could not be late for. Very efficient. He also knew what he wanted. After all dogs were examined and lined up, he would sort them in his order, send them around and about half way around would make his placements known. We were showing a red special dog. In the classes he put up all fawns so I was expecting all fawns in Best of Breed. In BoB he gave clear direction and was again very efficient. To my suprise he placed a Red dogs as BoB (went on to G2 under another judge) and Select Dog, Fawn bitches as OS and WD, and a red bitch as select bitch. I though it was appropriate placing. I will gladly show to him again. Very Professional, polite and gentle with the dogs. Disclosure: My dog was the red spedial dog that was awarded Select Dog. I was owner handler.

Very much a handler judge. Made the right decision and put a handler on my open bitch for her last point. She won but I know she would not have with me on her. DNS and Do not hire list.

Gave the man a chance and he is on my DNS list. Does not know movement and he is a big name handler judge. Do not waste your money.
Nov 23, 20161WoodwyndDalmatians
If our standard does not address anything other than a scissors bite, it is not necessary to do a full dental exam like a doberman's on young dalmatians.

showed to him once in nohs put up my dachshund group 2 out large group of hounds most long leggied, showed to him breed, seem to like flashy happy animated dogs with good side movements, was pleasant to show to, enjoy showing, patient when the ring steward called the wrong number back in and mess us up for winners class, all 3 bov were standards in wires was a nice mini wire special but he was very shy that day did not get anything my boy did take bov same dog he put up nohs and another sw was select some of the other coats nice movement and happy look at me attitude

Watching from ring side, with a small entry, and a few absent, Mr. Bolus had to select winners with what was in the ring. Winners dog was a no brainer, and in bitches Winners was petite and with a well known face. He seemed matter of fact with ring procedure.

Silly me, thinking that just maybe he has changed his judging ability, but no, has the same mentality. Only P/H should show to him!

Had a judge change from Dana Cline to David Bolus. Took my Veteran dog (9 yrs) to him He awarded the old dog with BOS and later, awarded him with Best Veteran. When I took him in for Vets, he asked me, "Just how old is this dog?" When I told him, he was surprised. He then thanked me for bringing him the old dog. His hands are firm on the dogs but kind, from what I can tell. Straightforward ring procedure. He couldn't go wrong in his selections. I'll take him another entry.

Prior to entering Mr. Bolus' ring, I read the comments here, but believed I should give him a chance. Well, live and learn. Every other comment is accurate. Does not look at the dogs, when he looks, he looks for faces. Mr. Bolus is terse, and acts bothered that an OH is even in his ring. None of his choices made sense. Passed up very good dogs for faces. Certainly, on my DNS list.

Has always been pleasant to exhibitor & dogs. Last time did not want any baiting on the table. No problem with the dogs he chose.

2014--Just plain RUDE!!! 2017--I stand by my first comments. Very rude to exhibitors, snapping at them when they did not stand in places he wanted or show armband upon entering and lining up in the ring. Overall judging was awful. Picked handlers whenever possible. When not, he simply picked the biggest dog in the ring. If you have mini dachshunds do not waste your money or your time with him especially if it is a small mini. Will not waste my money again.

This guy is not qualified to judge working dogs but can certainly point to who he recognizes! UPDATE 2020 - we've avoided the circuits where he's been assigned to judge our breed for six years. Just checked in to see if he's worth an entry yet - apparently not!
Mar 25, 20141workingworking
I've shown to this judge a couple of times and this time- No More! He only has eyes for the professional handlers.
Jun 17, 20131DragonmystBeauceron
Watched him put up a handler showing a dog with disqualifying coat type over a very nice owner-handled special. Absolutely no excuse for this type of behavior!
Feb 24, 2013anonymousWorking
Unless you have a big name handler, don't bother...judge will not get an entry from us.
Jan 27, 20133HerdingShelties
3rd time for me. Only consistency was in the pretty faces. Probably last time unless we get that face added to our balanced line.
Jan 27, 2013Herding
Entered twice under him and there won't be a third time. I have no idea what he is looking for, but it certainly wasn't movement or type.
Jan 6, 20131AnonymousWorking Breeds
Very inconsistent judging, aside from being consistent about putting up only handlers. Should have known the jig was up when handlers showed up on the open class dogs...not usually the case in the breed I watched. WD looked like another breed, beyond overdone/sloppy. Gave BOB to a dog that was totally lame in the rear. A friend said today "it's a good thing that some judges are just political, because if they weren't then you would really have to wonder about their sanity or competence." Jeez...and we wonder why entries are down? Mr. Bolus is a big part of that reason. If you can't afford to put a handler on your dog, do not bother.
Oct 4, 20124Jim HayesShetland Sheepdog
He did a good job, very directive on what he wants done in the ring.
Aug 1, 20112ZirkCrRottweilers
Found this judge to be arrogant and rude to handlers in his ring. Chewed me out for daring to use bait in the ring (he never mentioned he didn't want us to use bait in the ring). Not a great experience for an o/h that was just starting out....DNS!
Jun 3, 20111anonMastiffs, Dogue
Seems petrified of the giant breeds. DNS!
Apr 3, 20111Great Dane
Better have a known handler with this one!!!
Jan 24, 20112DWPEMS
Stick with a handler, and a well-known one, or you are wasting your money.
Nov 22, 20101WORKING
this judge is arrogant and not a nice judge at all. He will not get any more enteries from me, I have better things to do than to show to someone like him. Very rude! On top of his attitude, he likes his handlers.
Apr 20, 2010anonymousBelgian Malinois
He does not know the breed standard of my breed. Put up dogs that were much larger than breed standard. He's on my DNS list.
May 23, 20091AnonymousBelgian Tervuren
DNS. Definitely political on top of lacking in breed standard knowledge. Don't waste your money or time. Put up adult male with completely reversed marking [no blackening] and stumped tail for dog-show politico's son.

Very nice in the ring. Good with puppies. Uses Handlers.

Watching him judge he looks like he is scared/nervous. He makes alot of direct eye contact also and dogs for some reason react to him by backing up or being nervous. Political also
Dec 8, 20084anonymousshetland sheepdog
This judge seemed to like outline and neck and showiness and blue merles. He rewarded handlers but was consistent in type
Nov 28, 20082Rottweiler
Found this judge lacking in knowledge of the breed and the standard, felt when he got confused he just went with how the dog entered the ring, a little heavy handed on the exam.
Nov 24, 2008AnonymousCollie
I found him to be patient, and knew what he wanted: sound body, temperament.
Sep 9, 20081anonshelties
very political, arrogant & cocky. Wouldnt waste my time under him again.
