Fairly political and did a poor job of judging. His WD and WB had very poor fronts in movement. He barely touched them for the exam and did not check depth of chest.

This is my first review. I'm working towards my Ch on my first show dog. Just 2 points left, all majors completed. I showed to this judge on Sunday the 9th in Rosemont, IL at Skokie Valley. I will not show to him again and wish I wouldn't have. If you are an owner handler, just don't bother. His exams were weak. During our exam, this judge went right in before even addressing the handler to examine the bite with no request of the handler to show the bit themselves. Owner Handlers, don't bother wasting your money even with a special. Our specials were pushed to the back of Breed. Owners don't matter to this judge.

I do not post reviews often myself, mostly read what others say, but wanted to share our experiences with Mr. Liepmann. My daughter has shown to him several times in last few years in the breed ring and most memorable was Eukanuba 2015 he pulled her and her bitch and the number one bitch in country with a top handler out for a run off. My daughter did get Select and that was the right choice that day, but Mr. Liepmann was looking at dogs this day as there were many other handlers in the ring. Another time 2 years later we saw him judge a young cattle dog quite nervous in the classes and he got down on his knees and pet the dog after down and back, offered it a treat and got the dog to relax and wag it's tail, and it was a very nervous dog but leaving the ring much more confident. This day he gave my daughter and her bitch BOB over a few handlers and another AKC judge. Our dog is an excellent mover with a great front and rear, a bit thicker for a bitch and has a bit weaker head for our breed. We have never shown to him in juniors but we did watch our friends Field Spaniel National on livefeed judging juniors and he was spot on. One of our favorite judges that has always given a good look to a junior with a good dog.

Gave my Bitch WB/BW with a very well known handler on the end of the lead. He never even looked at her, just continued to talk to my handler as he patted her on the head. If you show your own dogs stay away from this judge or do what I did and hire a face he knows.

This is probably one of the worst excuses for a judge we've seen in some time. Doesn't even watch an owner handled dog on the individual, only points to the end of the line. An absolute insult to anyone paying to show to him.

Used to be reallygood. Now just your run of the mill political judge who will always put up a pro over a breeder/owner/handler like me. Really clear my group winning bitch wasn't being considered over the big pro with a cow hocked oversized male. Last show (I refused to enter) he put up a pretty pro on an UNDERsized male. Completely disgusted with his judging as a breed mentor.

He likes a different type of dog in my breed than I show, but he gave us a lot of consideration and gave serious thought as to whether the win should go to the dog with the type he prefers or mine. We didn't win, but he was excellent to show to, paid attention, and was very pleasant. Would show to again if I had the type he prefers.

Super nice guy to show to. Very pleasant to the dogs and handlers. Maybe did what was expected but gave everyone a fair look regardless.

Mr Liepmann had a small class entry (1 pt in each sex), and a relatively large specials class (6-2) of overall good quality. The entry was mostly owner-handled; the current #3 dog was with a "big" professional and did win the breed. Mr Liepmann was pleasant and thorough, giving everyone a good look. Overall, he made good choices.

I also witnessed this judge rehashing dinner conversation from the night before with exhibitors before then putting up one of his dinner conversants from the night before. Very bad form.

I will never show to this judge again. He chatted and joked with the professional handlers before and during the judging. Those are the ones the judge ended up putting up. Several spectators mentioned this conduct.

Went with the familar rather than the outstanding

Was rough with one of the puppies, GRABBING the side of the pup's muzzle skin. Pup shied and from that point on, normally happy pup had a fearfulness in the ring. Reinforces my DNS list where he was added a while ago but wanted to give him a second chance. Not ever again. He needs to learn what real working dog movement is, not just fluff.

Had Mr Liepman for my barely 6 month puppy boy's first ever show. He was GREAT with the pup - REALLY made his first ring experience fun. We laughed and pupster knew everything was alright. Only us, another baby puppy girl, and the current "it" dog. Of course BOB went to the "it" dog, and in group Liepman only gave "it" group 2, so that's encouraging. I'll see what I think when my boy's really ready to win. I've 'heard' he's political, I'll update when I have an opinion.

Seems to prefer curly, particularly when in a retriever clip
May 5, 2011 | 4 | WD | PEMS | |||||
Not concerned with pretty faces - wants good structure, substance, and especially, correct movement - Looks at the dogs.

Very rough and inpatient. I showed him a dog that he excused as the dog shyed away from his rough handling. This same dog had recieved a 4 pt major the day before and the day after. He also went BOW at the National. He is the first and only judge I have on a DNS to list.

Seems to like substance and movement. Does not care who is on the other end of the lead. I have been put up regardless with a very sound bitch even with 2 very well known handlers on other specials. Gives a fair shake I would say.

Likes small dogs with pretty faces, doesn't know movement.
Nov 24, 2008 | 2 | Goldens | ||||||
Big, Blonde and Fluffy. All others need not apply. The only time he doesn't care who is on the other end of the lead is when he doesn't know them. He does for who he knows in handlers.

Seems to prefer substance first, then movement. Didn't appear to be overly concerned about presentation. |
