I don’t know about his ability to judge other breeds of other groups, but he is terrible at judging working breeds, that’s for sure. Put up for a large Group 1st a mediocre Samoyed with incorrectly shaped eyes, excessive kick-up of the hind legs, and close-moving front and rear because he had a famous pro handler. Maybe poor movement is forgivable to him but in a working breed it is absolutely essential that the dog is structurally sound and shows it through sound movement. I guess rewarding his favorite handlers is more important to him though. If you’re a working breed exhibitor, DNS.

Looking for soundness and good movers, doesn't care who's handling. Looking for correct according to the standard, and willing to put up good dogs who are owner-handled and unknown over top-ranked dogs with big-name pros.

Clueless and hopeless. he is looking for the faces only and doesn't give a sh**t about the dogs. I have shown to him three times over six years and that would be it! Never again.

I think in my breed he dislikes over-sized. Lucky for me that's not what I brought him! Pleasant & professional.
Jun 29, 20192Nony Herding
I went against my instincts and entered to him as the first day of a cluster - I had the only dog entry and the bitches were me (BOH) and five very young handlers - it was as if I was not in the ring - I needed to go back in for reserve and he just looked at me when I came back in and said "oh, ok" and turned to give reserve to another of the handlers, never looking back at me - and did not cross the one point - not that I think it should be automatic, but I had a very correct, in coat, nice example of the breed young dog, and wasn't even looked at - there were no specials and maybe he wanted to make sure his pick was represented by a handler in the group?

I stewarded for Mr. Shreve and he is quick & decisive. He was willing to answer my questions about various breed aspects: movement, etc. I enjoyed working with him and learning from him. He knows what he's looking for and doesn't hesitate to put it up. He has no tolerance for lateness to his ring. BE ON TIME OR EARLY! Also, do not cut corners on the mats, putting your dog on the slippery floor.

I will try one more time showing to him, let’s hope he can see past the end of the lead and judge dogs. If he not familiar with standards hope he can reply on basic structure. He can judge dogs if he wants to I have seen it. One more time to see?

Observed Mr Shreve judging several breeds today - from terriers to herding. It was pleasant experience just to watch ring side. Also had few dogs shown to him today. We had above average entry, PRO and OH were represented evenly. He truly made his choices by his liking of dogs, not people. As for our observation he really liked great moving dogs and payed a lot of attention to side movement. He will give You reasonably enough time to stuck Your dog on the table, but not too much. Frankly I do not think table stuck mean for him a lot, as he really want to see those dogs on a move. Surely knows his terriers and knows what he likes in those. Would show again any time. PS. We had two green puppies shown today for their second day out. Not a problem. I would take puppy in his ring.

Never again after the treatment from this judge in the ring!! He was rude, condescending and had no tolerance for puppies. I have never experienced such a horrible time in the ring with his constant ridicule and demeaning comments while trying to stack a a very happy puppy. He was very heavy handed with the puppies so much so that the happy puppy now shys from men which she never has done. He is the reason quit this sport.

Likes certain handlers and I will not show to him again.

He has a very nice ring demeanor. He spent time with each entree and did a very thorough examination. He also took time after showing to talk with competitors. He knows what he likes in a dog, seems to know the standard and puts it up.

The show: Sierra-Tuolumne KC, Sonora, CA, Saturday 10/11/2014 The entry: 2-4-1-2 Disclaimer: We were awarded Best of Breed Showing to Mr. Shreve was one of my most enjoyable recent ring experiences. He is warm and friendly with exhibitors and dogs alike. His examinations were by far the most thorough of any judge I’ve seen. Given the importance of a “striking square appearance”, Mr. Shreve took the time to measure each exhibit’s body and leg length. (I’m thinking of attaching the picture of his hands on Rebs .. what do you think?) He was mostly serious, but not stern, in his demeanor, but he enjoyed joking with his ring steward and the exhibitors. I would enthusiastically enter under Mr. Shreve again. The Winners: Best of Breed went to our girl Rebel, a solid, square, substantial black/brindle & white bitch with a nice topline, confident movement and big round expressive eyes. Best Opposite went to a breeder/owner handled boy… again, solid, substantial and very expressive. Winners Dog/BOW was a professionally handled medium-sized boy with lovely markings and an eye catching head. Winners Bitch was a breeder/owner handled bitch from the BBE class, substantial but not bully in body with a soft, feminine face.

Knows his terriers. Unconcerned about handler - judges dogs!

Mr. Shreve was a very pleasant man to show to. Very friendly seemed to enjoy being there. The good stops there. He did a disservice to our breed today by judging. Putting up dogs for class wins that were not even structurally sound. One resembled a whippet/boxer mix. Just very sad day at the dog show all around. Honestly just seemed to be "spreading the love" to all the handlers present. He will not be getting my entry again.

Was in the ring with a well known handler and top winning dog, Mr. Shreve put up a better example of the breed instead of top winning dog. But was not quite with it in judging for BOS...don't know what happened there. cutest girl handler? Unsure but WB should not have defeated specials bitch.

Pleasant personality and nice ring procedure. Has no eye for chow movement, or structure, but can spot the occasional PH in our breed. All final placements were dark red, very little shading, and rough coat, and that was all they had in common. Structurally he was across the board.

Kind to puppies and exhibitors.
Oct 1, 20122BethHerding Group
Very friendly and pleasant, may give him another chance sometime but does appear to lean towards handlers rather than the best dog there. Rather heavy handed going over the dogs on the table however so be sure to bring a dog that doesnt mind that.
Jun 12, 2012O/Hworking
Even at a show with a O/H competition the results were Handler/Handler/OH (only one of the sex) Handler, Handler, Handler. Oh he was friendly & chatty, but only with the handlers.
May 27, 20124asibeMalamute
As previously noted by someone. Judge took the time with each dog. Talked to the handlers, mostly constructive hints and although I might have disagreed on a couple, I really could not find fault with his picks. Overall, I had the feeling that he was very fair and enjoys his Judging.

Does like good movement but also prefers handlers over movement

I believe that this judge actually enjoys his wkends- he goes over all the dogs and think that he likes a good top line.

Well he has definitely changed from my earlier post of April 2009. He was shown the very same dogs and put the other dog up this time for breed. The dog is still just as long as he was back then but I think he finds him more acceptable since they advertise so much. I think he likes to see himself in the magazines. He consistently awards his KC friends as predicted. I will not show to Mr. Shreve again, he has gotten his last entry from me for all of my breeds.

Fun to show to and enjoys what he is doing. He does like to talk but I think it helps to put the dog and handler at ease. He loves great movement and musculature. Will show to him again.

Mr. Shreve is an excellent judge of this breed. Has always been fair....knows a good compact cobby dog. One that is bred and can do the job it was bred to do. Very friendly in ring and judges dogs not other end of the lead. And i haven't shown to him in a long time but i would.
Jun 15, 2011Kimeric CorgisPWC
Very nice ring procedure. Does not award puppies. Picked both winner's/res. winner's from the open class handled by professional women handlers.

Very nice, thorough judge… put up natural ears…. square, well moving danes….
Feb 9, 2011Eden CorgisPembroke Welsh Corgi
Although it is always nice to have a friendly pleasant judge, Mr. Shreve really takes it to an extreme. He spent a good deal of time talking to several handlers in the ring, watching the dogs in the next ring and chatting with ringside spectators. He paid much less attention to his corgi entry. His understanding of the pem standard also left a lot to be desired! He would find a good one occasionally, but mostly rewarded faces.

Mr Shreve was very thorough in his exam, pleasant, friendly and patient. He put up a BOH for BOB (over a BIG handler), which was the typiest special in the ring. WD/BW to another very typey BBE entry (only one class bitch entered). Definitely not political today....
Sep 12, 20102anontymousenglish springer spanielExpert!
judged a specialty entry and picked the worst of the entries as his winners. all ribbons went to the big handlers. clearly has no concept of what is correct in this breed!

For the first time ever, Mr. Shreve put up not only one, but two of my dogs. I was shocked. In talking with him while taking pictures, he told me that he is an architect and proportions and lines are very important to him. He does not like a long dog. Both of these dogs were more square than the others that I have shown him so this finally made sense to me.

He was very patient, nice, & easy going with 3 young Komondor puppies.

Very much into who is on the end of the leash, NOT what the dog or bitch looks like... :( sad, very sad...
Mar 16, 20092Sheri WrightSiberian HuskiesExpert!
chats it up with his friends in the ring, and of course they win, very unprofessional. Pretty much knows nothing about this breed or at least doesn't just them to the standard. Puts up all handlers and an undersized bitch with no leg for WB/BOS.

He does have a sense of humor, that may surprise one, but he does seem to know his faces. I had thought his breed was West Highland White Terriers, tho.
May 26, 20071Ardenvale BoxersBoxers
Very poor judge. So biased against natural ears that he placed a pet quality cropped bitch over a beautifully balanced bitch with an exquisite head.

Very nice to everyone. Unfortunatly he does not know the shetland sheepdog.
