It is time for him to retire from judging. He was very confused during the judging procedure. After awarding Best of Breed to a long-time, well known handler, all the other placements were awarded based upon the position of the dogs in the line up. Then he was not even able to hand out the ribbons correctly.

Willing to put up an owner handler over pros if he likes what you present to him

Checks bites and runs hand over back for an exam. If you dog does not look great stacked, don't bother. Seems to look at side movement and stacking. Beyond that puts up other judges and handlers despite quality of dogs.

A bit of a curmudgeon, he clearly rubs some exhibitors the wrong way. I saw no evidence of undue handler bias. Devoted the largest share of his attention to the down and back, seemingly placing high priority on true movement coming and going. Hands on examinations were very cursory. Seemed to prefer dogs shown in hard working condition.

Loves young women. Doesn't have much of an eye for our breed. DNS and Do not hire list.

I found this judge to be quite rude. He actually seemed disinterested in judging my breed, went through very quickly and picked handlers every time he could. On my DNS list for sure!

Bad pick in dogs, but, decent in bitches. He put up familiar faces.

Very small entry but the judging was good. He was pleasant and easy with each dog. He gave each dog a fair look and then made his choices. Even though he put up handlers in the breed I felt he put up the best dog in the ring. Will show under him again.

I almost didn't enter because of the comments about him being rough with the dogs as I have a new puppy. This judge was just the opposite. He was so gentle with my puppy even when he examined the bite. He wasn't rude or mean at all like some of the comments expressed - he was very pleasant. It was a scorching hot weekend and an outside show - he made sure dogs and handlers were in the shade as much as possible. So I just had to share my experience with him. It was a positive one.

Watched this judge today judge multiple breeds and groups and had no concerns about his judging. I'd hesitated about entering under him, given some of the comments; but I would certainly give him a try after what I saw today. Certainly not a "warm and fuzzy" guy but very professional and made very reasonable picks. I never saw him being rude. He DOES only watch the dog typically at the very beginning of the go-around but he does that with everybody. Just need to be prepared that he's only going to see the very first part of your move. Just showed to him and my experience was the same as what I observed; I'd show to him any time with a good specimen that moves. Just showed to him for a second time. If you have a special, he will just gesture where he wants you to go or what he wants you to do--it can be somewhat confusing. We did well as a special, but he made one very odd choice elsewhere. He was either penalizing handling or wanted a more refined entry.

Knows the breed well, was willing to put up the correct type dog over every one else with a very large entry. Looks for the correct size, not over sized and movement.

He is definitely a handler judge, or you need to be as good as a handler to get rewarded. I thought he may be worth showing to since my 4-6 mth puppy won the Toy group with a large toy puppy group under him but there were no pro Handlers either. I do feel like he gave us good consideration, he even asked me how old she was, even though we were in the 9-12 month puppy class, and we were the only ones in the class. I know I need to work on a lot with my handling skills. So if I get to the point that I get to that level of a PH then I would show to him again.

He looks for a good, honest dog. If it meets the breed standard, he will consider it. I've won and lost under him and he will continue to get entries from me. I guess some could be put off by his ring presence but if you know how to show your dog, you won't have any trouble with him.

Didn't even glance at the dogs in the ring as he "judged" them, so hard to say what he's looking for, or perhaps, who.

not that he did anything wrong, he just did not seem to have anything in particular he was looking for, his winners did not resemble one another either in size, type, movement or structure. Not sure what he is looking for, and i would keep that in mind if i show to him again.

Has his favorite handlers and it definitely showed in the toy group. He gave us a good hard look but that was it. So when he judged our breed I thought we might get a decent look. In the classes, if a handler had a dog, they won even though they may not have had the best dog. Mr Stein barely touched my dog in the breed competition but did a thorough exam on each handler's dog. BOB went to a bitch with a very well know handler. I was surprised to receive BOS. My special is very balanced between type and stucture so I guess Mr Stein will reward a good dog even if shown by an owner/handler. Will give him another try.

Handlers, handlers, handlers. Put up a bitch for a major so lacking in breed type it seriously looked like it was not even in the same group (Working), let alone breed! So if he's not totally political, then he's absolutely without a clue! UPDATE: just gave a lame GSMD (with a handler) the breed over the National Specialty Winner and at the same show excused the only special in Saints for limping (the dog was sound!) to then give BOB to a 6 month old puppy dog with a handler, and there were several beautiful typey, sound bitches there way more deserving of being sent to group! Icing on the cake -- he's just rude and gruff, points and grunts rather than actually speaking to people. How does this guy still get assignments, let alone entries!

Seldom do I complain about terrible judging, but this is one judge that I will make an exception. Tap, tap, tap, touch here, down & back, don't look at the dog. Terrible exam, rough on mouth, put up usual suspects. Last time I will ever show to him, & will do my best to inform others of his lack of judging abilities.

I recently showed under Mr.Stein and was disappointed to say the least. several fellow exhibitors stated that he was mean and impatient with them and extremely heavy handed examining the dogs. Having shown to him before and knowing that he was all business in the ring, I kind of shrugged the comments off. Then my turn to show came and I soon saw what they meant. This was not the same man I showed under before. The word rude does not adequately describe this judge's treatment of exhibitors. Certainly a novice would be hesitant to continue in our sport if this is an example of how they would be treated in the future. Where are the judges like Mr.heitzman-who truly enjoyed both exhibitors and dogs? Geri Kelly-another wonderful judge to show under. Jon Cole- who is tolerant of the inexperienced and guides them along. If judging is such a burden to some of these judges, then they need to resign and find a different line of work. When I asked Mr.Stein how he faulted my dog he responded that he couldn't possibly remember my one dog out of the many he had judged. and the tone of voice and demeanor stopped other exhibitors in their tracks because they could not believe a judge would treat an exhibitor in this fashion. Sad to say, but at one time I respected this judge and recommended him to clubs for assignments. Needless to say, those days are done, and i will not ever enter under him again. Dog shows are to be enjoyable and memorable for the good things not for the bad.

In the breed ring he did a great job of examining all of the dogs. He does not give instructions while in the ring so it is important to watch the breeds before yours. If you are the first you will just have to guess. In the group ring he did less thorough exams and picked the same dogs that had won all weekend. Will show to him again to see if he is consistent.

Wow! Very rude, gave virtually no verbal commands of what he wanted. Paid ZERO attention to any dog moving, instead would look at the line up. Very frustrated with judges, who we are paying to judge our dogs, not even given the entry the courtesy of looking at the dogs! on my DNS list.

Stated that a working coursing bitch from AKC lines had "too much loin muscle". Hello? The greyhound standard requires muscle. RE: the loin, the standard states, "good depth of muscle" and for the back, "muscular and broad". He appears not to know the greyhound standard.

This man gives the impression that he does NOT like judging, or being in the ring. Think the word is GRUMPY. Found his wife much NICER, with softer hands. He will be on my DO not show.
Feb 15, 20103MudpuppyKeeshond
He was personable. There was a metal drain cover running the length of the ring, which really spooked some of the dogs. He adjusted his ring procedure to account for this, which I thought was quite nice. Although I believe he chose the right animals, I'm not sure I know WHY he chose them--there was a certain perfunctoriness involved.

Please be aware that there are two judges named Robert Stein - one from Oregon and one from Texas - and be sure you do your notes and ratings for the right one.

Not sure how much he knows about the breed and if he even likes it. He has missed some of the best the breed has ever seen in the group.
Jan 6, 20084Patty HarbisonSealyhams
I thought he did a nice job with my Sealyhams-he was a last-minute judging change, but evaluated the dogs and placed them as they should have been, then took time to talk about it with me afterwards.

Seemed to wish he was elsewhere...gave instructions and before they could be completed asked for the dogs to be put on the table, before you could even get 4 feet on the table he had completed his exam and gave further instructions but then watched other rings or the scenery instead of his own exhibits then proceeded to make political decisions and when none of those were available made very inconsistant choices that had no reason.

Appears to be biased against natural ears.

Showed to him in Group with Class dog, placing Group 2 (owner handled). Likes a nice standard typey dog.

Really, really political and doesn't know the standard at all -- wife is far better.
