Has a deep and longstanding aversion to sable merles and has withheld multiple times even on nationally ranked dogs. Does not matter if the eyes are brown and matching - if he sees a merle pattern, you are done. Will not give any entry to a judge who fails to follow our standard which DOES NOT HAVE A COLOR DQ.
Jun 1, 20193Tatiana Terriers, schnauzers.
Observed him judging several terrier breeds and a terrier group. At my opinion he generally makes pretty good choices and will disregard handler, if like the dog. Unlikely his wife can also find a good schnauzer. Patient with people and dogs. Look like enjoys his work.

Very kind and gentle with puppies and is forgiving of some puppy behavior. Appreciates type and a good side gait. Always a pleasure to show to. Pleasant to exhibitors...love showing to him!!!

I had the entire entry in the breed. Class bitch not really in coat, but she showed her brains out and is real quality. My very young special bitch crabbed around the ring like crazy, really really naughty. He gave the breed to the special, I would have done the reverse. Did not check bite on either girl, nor did he ask me to do so. Sunday update: I spoke to the AKC rep last night. Today we had Col. P for the NOHS group ring. Once again, he did not ask to see my girl's bite and barely looked at her. Although bite is not super-important in my breed, there IS a preference (scissors) an fault (overshot) and a DQ (undershot.) He had no way of telling whether my dogs' bites were within standard. His wife, IMO, did a much better job. At least she gave the appearance of looking at all exhibitors.

I just showed to Col. Purkhiser. I was skeptical after reading his notes. He was pleasant enough. Could not say he did a bad choice in WD & WB. One was a handler and the other was and OH. His reserve choice I did not agree with. Dog needs to mature a bit more. AT least my thoughts. Did pick a Handler who has had one heck of a time winning his last 15 shows. This Special is done. He found the good ol boy handler. So in my opinion I would not show to him again. I believe what others have said is true with his politics. So I learned.

Permanently on my DNS list after putting up two very poor quality dogs with known handlers. A complete reversal of previous day's judging.

He as very good with puppy's and gentle , he didn't let color persuade his mind , She was a red puppy bitch that moved nice had a pretty head and lot of body . Chose the best puppy in the ring that day

First time I've shown to Col. Purkhiser, I place 1st in BBE and reserve. He seems to love a good moving Whippet. Loves balanced and properly put together Whippets. He was consistent in his placements . I will show to him again.
May 8, 20152Red StaffiesTerriers
Have to agree with most folks here. I've shown to him dozens of times over the years in several terrier breeds. He IS consistent. He consistently places faces and friends. Today was the worst ever. Places two mediocre nothing special about them so so movers over stunning entries time and time again. The only thing we could figure out is those with lovely dogs seemed to be unknown handlers or owner handlers. He also found each BOB from the previous day's group ring. He seemed bored. Sighed often. Looked off into other rings. Disinterested. That's my last entry to him. **UPDATE** I do enjoy watching this one judge. He does know a good terrier. Shame he only points to handlers though. He missed a few good ones this last show.

No clue what a good moving Dachshund is supposed to look like. Penalizes if your dog is not a statue--put up scared, barely walking dogs who stood still over great movers who were a bit antsy while stacking.
Aug 13, 20135DragonmystMultiple
Always love showing to him! He is fairly consistent in what he puts up. Can be political at the group level, but that's pretty common...
Jul 15, 20134AnonymousSporting
Was pleasant, gentle & calm with my puppy in exam. Liked the larger open bitch that was handled well by amateur handler - nice pace around the ring, straight down and back, stopped in time for him to get a good look.
Jul 7, 20132anonherding
tends to pick familiar faces (Ie: professional handlers) over better dogs. It's a shame so many judges are like that these days.
Jun 6, 20131anonymousterriers
Puts up his Texas friends. Take a look at Gray Summit MO terrier group 06/02/13, and look at the fabulous, MBIS dogs who did NOT place in the group.
May 30, 20133AnonWorking
Why bother showing to a judge who only picks his friends..when will we learn..he doesn't care about the dog standard,,,
May 18, 20131MSGTerriers
Very rough on head exams and not consistent in his choices. Left me wondering why breed standard he studied.
May 13, 20131jjokTerriers
Thought I would give this judge another chance and he did not sway from his usual course. Mediocre dogs on handlers won every time. He even had some new choices and still went with the worst dogs. It was my last try...this man needs to retire.
Dec 10, 20124AnonGreat Dane
He checks the teeth, which is always helpful for those with new dogs. Seems friendly and gives clear directions in the ring. People traveled long distances to finish their dog under him and it worked.
Nov 25, 20123RocklandChows
He was fair with us, consistant in the breed. BB & WD from the same kennel different OH's. WB/BOS was similar to the dogs. Good ring procedures and paid attention to all.

I continue to watch this judge put up the worst dogs on professional handlers. When will people learn and quit entering under these types of judges. Very disappointing to see the good judges go to the faces. His terrier choices were the worst.
Apr 25, 20123Elaine Hansondachshunds
Showed to him 3 times and gave up - on my DNS list. Have since seen him judge 2-3 more times, did not enter, but observed that he was able to find better dogs to put up compared to previous assignments. Seems to have figured out that the dachshund is not a long-eared version of the PW Corgi. If he was in the middle of a 3-4 day panel I was going to because I like the other judges, I would give him an entry.
Apr 19, 20122HerdingShetland Sheepdog
In large entry with many pro handlers, he did what was politically "correct". Will not show to him as he put up what did not fit the breed standard.
Apr 1, 20122kathleen lazzariniGSMD
Will not show to him again. Very clear that he was more compelled by who was handling the dog than the dog itself :(
Jan 26, 20123cmshetland sheepdog
Not sure what he likes. I had two of my females showing same day for entry to hold, one in 18 month pup class and the other in bred by. He put up the tri in pup class over my very well moving blue. The tri doesn't like the leash and doesn't move as well. She does have a beautiful face, but I think both do. It was a small entry with no handlers. He was very pleasant.
Nov 27, 20115anonymousworking
wow, watched him put up a very poor moving youngster in group. He had some great dogs to choose from and puts up a class dog that was so unsound it barely got around the ring. Doesn't know good breed type in our breed.
Aug 1, 20112ZirkCrRottweilers
Very disappointed in this judge, not only with my breed, but watched him judge other breeds with equal dismay...thought originally that he was judging the north end of the leash...but have come to the sad conclusion...he actually lacks full knowledge of breed standards he's judging, and not just in rottweilers...DNS!!!!
Jul 20, 20111anonymous
Put up his buddies and his favorite handler consistently at Houston Terrier show. Very disappointing.
May 31, 20113Adrienne FreyerVizslaExpert!
I've shown to this judge several times with working breeds. He seems to be a it or miss guy. I've won & lost under him with same & different dogs. I figured he was a crap shoot with the large Vizsla entry. While I didn't necessarily agree with all his placings (he seems to prefer a substantial dog) he was pleasant & he did find good dogs for WD, WB, BOB, & BOS. Politics did not come into play on this day.
May 23, 20115WilliamIrish Wolfhound
Likes a large dog with a good gait. Does not seem to favor handlers. Good technique in the ring, very clear as to what he wants. Helpful and pleasant to non-professional exhibitors.
Jan 26, 20113noneall
Pleasant in the ring, nice exam technique, but predictable placements - likes his handlers
Oct 25, 20101anonTerriers
This judge has always picked the best dog and the best quality no matter who is on the other end. This seems to have changed. He is now on my DNS list and I never thought I would say that.
Jul 15, 2010AnonSt Bernards
While he was judging (and I use that term loosely) St Bernards, (my breed) he was busy watching the ring next to him that was showing German Shorthaired Pointers most of the time. Maybe this is why his Saint judging was somewhat odd.?
Jul 14, 20104Kathleen M BrewerNorfolk & Std. Manchester TerriersExpert!
Very nice to show to. Will look past the handlers and put up the best dog in the ring.
Jul 1, 2010Jenny DevlinPolish Lowland Sheepdog
One of the most NON-political and fair judges I have ever shown to. Judged the dogs and not the faces. It was a pleasure to show him.
Apr 23, 20101AnonymousDachshund
Is on my DNS list after putting up a pretty handler with a poor dog over a high quality dog.
Mar 31, 2010Amy PoppOES
I can't speak for the pretty handlers but, he did put up an unknown for BOB and then a Group 1. Very nice and usually very consistent.
Oct 29, 20081AnonymousHerding
Likes faces, but pretty ones. Send ugly dogs in with pretty handlers.
Aug 12, 20081anoncollies
Looked at movement in the breed ring. Political in the group ring.
Nov 9, 20071anonyTerriersExpert!
Heres one I'll never show to again - and have done a lot of winning under him in the past. He DOES know a good dog, but, that being said, he also spreads his wins around to keep "everyone" happy - which keeps no one happy.
Oct 31, 20071German Shepherd
Does not appear to know the breed. Seems to want to look up the lead rather than at the dog. Choices can be confounding at best.
Sep 23, 2007Diamond HillAustralian Shepherd
Seemed more interested in looking at the young women handling vs. the dogs
Sep 14, 20072anon
This is one judge i will not enter under again. He seems to be more interested in the 2-legged than the 4!!
Apr 4, 20072Anonoymous
Can be very political....looks at the other end of the lead. Also if you are from Texas you have a good chance of winning. He is in the group "TX judges put up TX people".
Mar 28, 20075FirecreekSmoothFT
Bred Shelties and Smooth Fox. Owner Handled the #1 SFT in late "80's. Judges to the standard, appreciates good side movement.
Mar 9, 20073DM GreyhoundsGreyhoundsExpert!
Have found him to really like movement. I've shown him three littermates, all of whom look somewhat different but all of which have good, sound movement. He has awarded all of them at different times and different shows. One was owner/breeder handled; one handled by a 10 yr old Junior; and one with a non-professional handler.
Jan 5, 20071ANONANY
Have found him to be very difficult to follow, appears to look only up the lead rather than at the dog. have seen nothing that would make me enter under this judge.
Dec 30, 2006anoncollies
judges dogs, wants a whole picture , good movement , head and showmanship. Known as a collie fancier, his original breed was Smooth Fox Terriers. Nice man, great with the dogs.
