Watched ringside today. Extremely political and does not know a good dog. Absolutely clueless and has been added to my DNS list.
Aug 20, 20221AnonBulldogs
This man shouldn’t be judging bulldogs he has no clue about the standard, I don’t have a problem losing but he withheld the reserve ribbon ( no explanation)on the bitches, one was a nice puppy BBEP class and the other BBE class she has 3 specialty majors ( at 16 months) and only needed a point to finish definitely on my DNS list. No clue as to his placing missed the Mark on the males also, put up a poor quality male for breed.

Moves the dogs a lot but doesn’t seem to know good movement. At least not for a working breed. Dogs with patterns are seemingly invisible in his ring.

Used to be a good judge, actually judged the dogs. Showed to him when I lived in CA around 1995, liked the BBE class, seemed to like movement. Showed again to him when I lived in TX 2010ish, wow, total difference, handlers. And just recently, again handlers.

Thinks every dog breed should gait like a poodle. Do not show with a working dog.
Aug 23, 20195AnonymousBasenjiExpert!
Although he is not that friendly, he seems to know what he likes and wants a well trained, well behaved dog, like a rock on the exam. He likes a clean, well moving dog. Also, follow his instructions! Always be showing your dog, he will turn around and check on you! I will definitely show to him again.

It is all about him in the ring. Not very pleasant with dogs nor with people. Wouldn't show green or skittish dog to him. Ideally - get a handler what he knows.

"All business" in the ring. No chit chat. Thorough exam, watched entire down and back/go--round. I had no issues with his placements. BOB was on a handler, but this bitch is top ranked and doing alot of winning so no issue there. Was very patient and forgiving with a Black and Tan Coonhound puppy who was terrified. I feel he's fair. Expects dog to be well presented, so prob no for novices or untrained dogs.

Should read the standards. Missed the boat on the best dogs in the ring. On my DNS list.

DUMPED 2 JR HANDLERS AFTER GIVING THEM 1ST IN THEIR CLASSES. WITHHELD BOTH AWARDS FOR WD/RWD BECUASE HE IS AFRAID OF SHIBAS DUE TO BEING BITTEN IN THE PAST. LET JRS IN TEARS. DOGS BEHAVED PERFECTLY. IF HE WERE AFRID WHY NOT RECUSE HIMSELF OR WH 1ST PLACE? DOES NOT MAKE SENSE.

would not walk across the street to show him a mutt.
Oct 21, 20154dsbgirlkeeshond
He knows what type of dog he likes but who is on the other end of the lead is just as important. Most of the time pleasant to show to but can be rude if it's a bad day.

I have shown to Mr. Garren several times for the years. He prefers a Boston with a tail (and will "dig" looking for one if one is not visible), of small/medium size, usually black & white or black brindle & white, and often selects from the BBE class. He will withhold ribbons if he doesn't feel it is merited. He is quick, thorough, seems to look at the dogs and not the handlers. He is very matter-of-fact with no chit chat and seems to take judging very seriously. He is not a "fun" judge to show to, but in my experience, he is fair, evaluates each dog using the same method - he uses his hands to measure the upper arm and front angulation, then quickly and smoothly goes over the chest, ribs, back, rears legs, etc.). He also seems to look at expression and movement, though a perfectly level topline is not mandatory. I will definitely show to him again, but not with a lighter brindle.

prefers handlers

So disappointed in his judging as I had heard he was fair but he let politics make the decision. He put up a dog that had not won his class or gone reserve any of the previous days beating a very deserving dog (not mine) On my DNS list.

Not the friendliest judge, and is very matter of fact. He put up the deserving dogs for winners based on movement, but, made the worst decision for BOB.

Quiet judge and pleasant. He looks at movement, balance and expression. All of his picks were middle in size and were both black and brindle. Will show to him again.

Was very disappointed in Randy Garrens judging. I had showed to him many years ago, but not recently. He needs to go back and re-read our standard. He had several nice males in beautiful coat and movement. So several choices, instead he put up a dog that was severaly overtrimmed or with a coat issue and not the greastest moving, when he gave the dog 1st in the class, there were gasps ringside, when he gave the dog WD/BOW, jaws dropped.
Nov 18, 20132AnonBeagles
Mr. Garren has an image of an ideal beagle in his head; unfortunately it’s not the breed standard but a real dog living in his area. Everything he judges is compared to that “reference specimen” and if your dog is quite good and highly appreciated by breed specialists, but has a different style comaped to “the reference”, your chances to win greatly decrease. Otherwise, he is very nice to show to, albeit I am not sure I would rush to show to him again.

Very prone to withholding awards, typically for what he considers inadequate grooming/conditioning (e.g, puppy coat on a puppy). He will also excuse for "product," by which he seems to mean "too MUCH product." Will put up a dog that's colored & hair-sprayed, as long as it's done subtly.

Judge was spot on. Pro handlers were in the ring but made no difference as he looked at the standard of the breed. Nice job
Jun 28, 20132RocklandChow
He is very friendly, and polite to all, and watched the exhibits. Seemed impartial to the handler.
Jun 12, 2013MarilynTerriers
Did some strange judging; Border put up had no bone, very small. Other better specimens; withheld ribbons in Russells - didn't like the type; some head scratching on selections.
Feb 10, 2013Sherry Andersonborzoi
did a great job judging this breed

Very good judge. Does not seem at all political. I didn't get what I wanted the day we showed to him but my entry and I didn't deserve it. Handling errors on my part.
Jun 15, 20125Carol DryMinPinExpert!
Mr Garren has always been very friendly and seems to enjoy judging our breed. He understands the antics of a minpin puppy. He has soft hands on the table, and does a quick exam, which is important in my breed. Would show to at any time, any place

Cut the ring in half...couldn't even move the dogs before stopping again. His choice for Longhair WD was understandable but for WB was ludicrous! Faced with a lineup of very nice bitches, he chose a weedy, tall girl that anyone else would have placed last...then gave WBR to same style as his WD. BOV winner was also that style...so have to wonder what prompted the departure for WB? Someone he knew? In Smooths, understandable class entries, but BOV was a nice bitch, but not as nice as a top ranked dog that was given Select. Nope. Won't waste another entry.

Pompous and self-important. Too busy being impressed with the fact that he's a judge to actually judge dogs. Gets a 1 only because I cannot give him a 0.
Oct 21, 20114AnonymousPomeranians
Likes pretty and showy poms, will put up puppies, if he likes them, even for breed over specials. Love showing to him because he judges dogs, not their handlers. Always very consistent in his choices, he often finds the same dog again months/years later and puts up littermates on different occasions etc. Not afraid to put up an o/h over pros he is familiar with.
Jul 14, 20114Robin GatesManchester Terriers
Works his ring very quickly but knows what he is looking for. He wants elegance, movement and structure. I would show to him again.
May 11, 20111Annontoy breeds
I showed once under him and put him on my DNS. Chose handlers over very obvious quality dogs which makes him either a handler judge or not enough knowledgeable about the breed. He was very not nice in the ring and did not allow the dog just standing at the ring side to come in to the ring for RWD - as he was in hurry (!!!)
Jan 10, 20115anonymousfrench bulldogs
Very nice in the ring. No nonsense. Seemed very knowledgeable of all non sporting breeds. Didn't seem to go with professional handlers as much as some. Would definetely show to again.
Feb 24, 20081Elaine SummerhillGreyhoundsExpert!
Watched him pull good dogs and place them in the appropriate order and then, make his breed selection from the middle to rear of the pack. Put up the poorest hound in the ring, one with an egg beater front, ski slope back, overangulated rear, etc. The egg beater front was the thing that put him immediately on my DNS list. Don't waste your money! I think he went with the handler, not the dog.
Nov 20, 20071juniors
not a very good junior judge - went one two three with only half the class judged. Dumped top juniors and put up a junior who was late to class. Many people smelled a set up.....
Nov 13, 20074Honey PotBeagles
He is very pleasant and knows the better dogs but he does seem to hate to dump his Big Handlers when it comes to BOV/BOB.
Jul 23, 20072tobilsfriendsall
Mr Garren has demonstrated he knows a good dog, but seems to be influenced by the other end of the lead.
Jun 21, 20074PrimeBluSilky Terrier
He was very detailed in his evaluation. Took time with each dog. Apparently knows our standard. Will show under this judge again.
May 20, 20072Dalmatian
He apparently makes a sport of dumping ranked specials to class dogs.
