I found this judge to be a structure judge. She critiques structure and movement. Sad to know she has passed away.
Dec 4, 20192AnonymousHerding Breed
I was very disappointed in her Group judging as she went with the usual placements in the area of the show. I thought that she would recognize good structure and movement.
Oct 25, 20191Rough and Smooth Collies
This is another judge that has a deep and longstanding aversion to sable merles and has withheld multiple times even on nationally ranked dogs. Does not matter if the eyes are brown and matching - if she sees a merle pattern, you are done. Our standard DOES NOT HAVE A COLOR DQ or even a color preference. DNS

I don’t think she has a good understanding of Papillon breed type. I won’t show to her again.
Jan 29, 20192JjkkllTerriers
She has some of the best advice for showing, structure and movement but she seldom utilizes it when judging. With over 50 of one breed in her ring, she picked the one for BOB that had an incorrect front, topline and tail. All other placements were consistent with correct type and structure. BOB was for a handler friend. Watched her do it again several more times. She will not get any more entries from me.

Not only NO, but H*LL NO! Likely THE most corrupt judge in the history of AKC dog shows! Oh, she knows good dogs, but has no use for that in the ring.
Mar 26, 2018anonymousvarious
passed over very nice correct dogs for dogs with poor toplines and no breed type
May 10, 20171AnonymousAlaskan Malamutes
I showed Alaskan Malamutes to Mrs Hastings after having sat through one of her 3 hr seminars so I thought I had a good idea of what she would be looking. In the breed ring my expectations were correct. She put up what I expected her to based on the information she had presented about structure. However in the Group ring that did was not the case. It got very political as dogs who move more soundly were over looked for those who have there pictures in magazines. Very disappointed.

Pat is very pleasant to show to.. I was under her with two breeds two consecutive days... She sure knows good dog with good structure, but it is also true she knows her handlers. Regardless, she will happily reward a good dog, if she sees one. Gave my OH bitch BOS for major the other day over 4 PROs, but made sure they didn't go empty handed either... Made right choices with dogs for the most of it. Will show again with the right dog any time.

I am so amazed at this judge! For someone who supposedly knows structure, she certainly passed up very correct entries to put up the worst structure in the ring, one of them couldn't turn a corner without falling over, but, they were with top handlers. I wasn't entered, so NOT sour grapes.
Jan 6, 20175Crystal RubiStandard Poodle
Mrs. Hastings was very nice and patient. When we entered the ring she asked me not to stack him. She checked his age. He turns a year in only 6 days. So I wasn't surprised. Did I mention I was late to the ring!! She was nice about it. We went around the ring and my dog was hopping a little. She asked us to retry thinking he was happy and excited. But after trying again it seemed like he was limping. I mentioned that I thought something was wrong. She said try down and back and let's see. He was still doing it. I obviously wanted to get him seen by a vet asap. She agreed that something must be wrong and suggested checking his foot. She said it was ashame because he was so beautiful. She was very understanding and pleasant. So we did not win or really get to show but Mrs. Hastings was so great about it! I can not wait to show to her again when my boy is 100%

Judged and put up structure, shoulder and rear angles, movement, bone and substance, was consistent. Very nice judge, smiled, patient, polite, good with puppies.

Great puppy judge. Nice angles, sound movement and a good temperament (Not necessarily the best trained or behaved) or you're not going much further.
Oct 14, 20145O/HGreat Dane
She awards good shoulders, bone, spring of rib and substance. Movement and good muscling is also something she puts up. She wants Danes with bone and substance. She absolutely puts up dogs regardless of who is on the other end of the lead and she is not afraid to put up the best dogs. I would not jump to conclusions until you have put your hands on the dogs she awards. Some dogs do not show well but are remarkably good dogs and Mrs. Hastings can find these dogs.

Pat Hastings is ALL about structure and movement. It was pure pleasure to show under her. She makes dogs and handler feel comfortable in the ring. If I had a young puppy she would be the one I would show it to. I am an owner handler.

So disappointed in her. Judged our National and did a horrible job of it. If she does know structure and movement - which I doubt - she chooses to put up handlers instead.

She was very nice to me and my puppy bitch in the ring. She was able to find my girl and awarded her a major . Movement seems to be high on her list. Nice owner handler win.

I have to agree with the last post. She went political all the way. This is the second time that I have witnessed this and I spoke with others after the show. All felt the same way. On my DNS and DNH list.

I did not have an entry, and I'm glad! I was very disappointed in watching Danes. She "wrote the book" on movement & conformation and yet she didn't judge that way! Put up all handlers with dogs that couldnt move!! I would not give her an entry!!
Mar 1, 20135SSD Dobes & SBT
Not sure where all this animosity is coming from. I have read her books, which are excellent and shown to her once in Dobes. Have also watched her judge another time. On both occasions, I observed her to be very pleasant and absolutely dedicated to a sound, square, nice moving dog. In all classes and breed, she stayed true to a balanced exemplar of the standard.
Jul 9, 20121Working dogs
She may or may not know structure, although I'm not aware of any akc breed standard overlooking lameness. She will go with the 'safe' choice every time as long as there's someone there she recognizes. What an insult to anyone who pays for an entry!
Jun 15, 20121anonworking breedExpert!
very disappointed about inconsistencies in placement, esp out of the specials classes. Commented on one dog having best movement seen for breed but didn't put that special up because the animal was shown with natural carriage, judge preferred head strung up. Will watch and wait how she judges in the future for this breed, before showing under her again.

I have read this lady's books and have watch her DVD on structure. Very suprised that she picked the corgis with the straight shoulders and no rear drive for WD and BOB (both with prof handlers)...found a pretty nice moving bitch for WB though shown by a owner/handler.

2016 update -Recently in a c/d breed (not dobes) she awarded BOB to a lovely all natural import bitch owner handled from the classes over top ranked specials. This win finished the dogs CH as her 3rd major (2 BOB from classes over specials) Good O/H judge and not afraid to place quality natural exhibits.
Jan 24, 2012working dogsworking
very curious....this so called 'expert' in structure and movement put a class bitch in first place that was clearly lame, and told the handler of another bitch in the same class that she only gave her 4th place (last in her class) because she was limping...the bitch was totally sound. Then she put up dogs/bitches with poor toplines, no rear drive etc etc. Seemed to go with faces at the end of the day.... not impressed.
May 18, 20112Robin GatesBostons
Looks for sound movement and level toplines. Will show to again.

UNBELIEVABLE judging a nationals! She gave breed to a SEVEN month old class puppy!! There were certainly several specials of good quality there. And lets not forget she evaluates litters for the breeders she gave BOB to. How kosher was this?!
Jan 12, 20091AnonHerding
Extremely rude and verbally abusive. Her reputation does not translate into the ring. Will never show to her again. Note that others have similar experiences over the last year.

Withheld reserve because the dog was a sable merle.

one of the rudest dog people I've ever met outside of the ring. for that reason, DNS lister

Has wonderful knowledge about structure (her videos, etc) however that does NOT translate over to her judging. Can be very political.

I have never liked this judges judging and wont let my clients make the mistake of entering under her again. She is definately a tooth ferry...I took her a square, sound moving Harl bitch that she gave 4th out of 4, when I came out of the ring, other exhibitors were not only shaking thier heads, but had some actually come up and asked if they could go over my girl...Absolutely!!! they couldnt believe she was dumped. She is also very rough with mouths, so beware

Have watched Pat judge for sometime now and oculd never put my finger on what it was that bothered me about her judging. Last June, I watched her judge several different breeds. Pat is very knowledgeable about structure and can absolutely find the best structure on any given day. She cannot however locate the best breed type.
Feb 6, 20084David K. Qualls, D.V.M.SiberiansExpert!
Pleasant. She actually seems to understand type and the correct gait for at least my breed- she especially appreciates a dog with good side gait.
Aug 23, 20073WOW Pomz & PinzPomeranianExpert!
She was very into structure/movement followed closely by type. I would say tooth fairy. I enjoyed showing to her.
Aug 9, 20073AnonymousGreat Dane
Has an intimidating "stare down" that she does from about 4 feet away while evaluating the dog's head from the front during the initial approach. It affects a lot of the dogs and not in a good way.
Jun 13, 2007keymasterDanes
She is a dobe breeder. I've noticed that a few who judge count teeth in other breeds who don't require it. don't know why. Pat LOVES structure. Take her a square well-moving dog.

Tooth counter in a breed where the standard does not address missing teeth at all.
