Doug has owned purebred dogs since he was ten (Boxers and American Cockers). He purchased his first Golden Retriever in 1971 and followed that with a Flat-coated Retriever in 1975 and a Belgian Sheepdog in 1980. He has bred over 150 litters of Golden and Flat-coated Retrievers and two litters of Belgian Shepherd Dogs, producing well over 100 Canadian Champions and somewhere in the vicinity of 56 American Champions. Doug has bred Best in Show winners in Golden and Flat-coated Retrievers and his Flat-coats have been #1 in Canada for at least 15 different years. He has also owned and bred a number of Obedience and Agility Champions.

Doug is the founder of the Flat-coated Retriever Society of Canada and is currently a life member of the Kitchener-Waterloo Kennel Club and President of The Elora Gorge Kennel Club, The Southwestern Ontario Sporting Dog Club and the Southwestern Ontario All Retriever Club. He is presently the Canadian Kennel Club Director for Southwestern Ontario (Zone 6).

Doug began judging in 1984 and became an All Breeds judge in 1995. He has judged in Australia, New Zealand, China, Venezuela, Columbia, Argentina and throughout the United States, and also judged in every Province in Canada. He judged the Canadian and American National Specialties for Flat-coats and Labradors as well as numerous American Golden Specialties and the Canadian National Golden Specialty. His dogs, Golden Retrievers, Flat-coated Retrievers, Belgian Shepherd Dogs, Schipperkes and Barbet are still actively shown in Conformation Shows and Performance events.
