Judge's Background & History

Mr. Houston Clark
Home: Decatur, TN
Initial Breed: German Shepherd Dogs

Houston Clark’s interest in animals began at an early age as he was raised on a horse farm in East Tennessee and showed walking and gaited horses into his teenage years.

Mr. Clark began his career in dogs as a hobby in the 1950s. In the beginning he owned and showed several German Shepherd Dogs in obedience and conformation. Eventually, he was licensed by the AKC to handle all breeds beginning in the early 1960s, and he was an all-breed professional handler for more than 25 years. He handled top-winning dogs in all seven Groups, and also bred a few litters of German Shepherds, Miniature Pinschers, Doberman Pinschers and Pembroke Welsh Corgis. He was named “Dogdom’s Handler of the Year” in 1985.

He began judging in 1987 after his retirement as a handler, and today is licensed for the Sporting, Hound, Working, Toy and Herding Groups, as well as Toy and Standard Manchester Terriers, Junior Showmanship and Best in Show. He has judged at top shows all over the world and at a number of national specialties.

He is a member of the American Dog Show Judges Association, a former officer and retired member of the Professional Handlers Association and is on the advisory committee for the AKC Registered Handlers. He also is a member of several local dog clubs.
